Welcome!

Welcome to our web site!

On this website, you will see beautiful scenery as well as works of art created by Billy Cunningham, Co-founder of Phoenix Rising Enterprises. Billy is also an experienced guide who will take you hiking, sight-seeing, camping, fishing and hunting in his own backyard, which just happens to be the Cumberland Plateau. He will expertly guide you through some of the most beautiful country in the USA.

Our work is a labor of love. We combine our knowledge of hiking and camping with early American history, geography, Native American culture, herbology and so much more. If you choose, we can teach you about the indigenous edibles and other native plants found along the Cumberland Platuea. You may even try some of them during your extraordinary meal-time breaks. Along with his many other talents and skills, your guide Billy Cunningham is also an accomplished chef. You can expect deliciously prepared foods cooked to taste over an open fire.

We have several guided tours, packaged for your benefit, but each trip can be modified to suit your interests.

Sojourn of Remembrance
This tour is a three day weekend experience along the Trail of Tears. Expect to begin hiking on a Friday, early evening and walk across the once well-trodden earth of many moons ago.

Cherokee Rites of Passage
Want to get to know yourself better while you get to know your earthly brothers and sisters? This tour is an overnight package, but can be stretched out for a weekend, if needed. Imagine sitting around a campfire with family or friends or even colleagues, listening to tales of Geronimo and other Cherokee warriors. Get in touch with your "inner warrior." Talk to the Great Spirit and give thanks to Mother Earth. There are many ceremonies denoting rites of passage to include, but not limitted to a child becoming an adult (great package for teens!), family bonding (intact families, step-families, broken families), dealing with grief and loss issues, motivating employees, relationship bonding/newlywed's retreat, entering the retirement years and more.

Mother Nature's Bounty
We have day trips or overnight trips for fishing, hunting and sampling  indigenous edibles found on the Cumberland Platuea.

The three packages can be combined as you see fit. Organizations such as church groups, social clubs, business affiliations and others are invited to call and learn how their groups can benefit from the natural healing powers of the great outdoors!

Imagine walking through a patch of woods on a mountain side. Your guide has promised a breathtaking view once you reach the top of the next hill. Hiking with anticipation, you learn that Native Americans traveled this very path a long time ago. The sound of broken branches underfoot brings forth an image of a broken people whose spirit lingers to remind others of the Trail of Tears. Once you reach the top of this small hill, you see the Cumberland Mountains in the distance and hear the sound of water that draws your attention to a remarkable waterfall. You might find a cave on the other side of this marvelous work of art created by Mother Nature and the Great Spirit. What other gifts await you?

Dream Catcher of the Cherokee
Among the Indians of the woodlands, the Cherokee believed that dreams have magical qualities, the ability to change or direct their path in life. Since the night air is filled with both good and bad dreams, one of the traditional beliefs was to hang a dream catcher on an infant's cradle board or in the lodges for the benefit of all. When hung, the dream catcher captures the dreams as they float by. The good dreams knowing their way slip through the center hole, drifting gently off the soft feathers to the sleeper below.

The bad dreams not knowing the way become entangled in the webbing, only to perish with the first light of the new day. Crafted by the elder women of the tribe, the originals were made of red willow, twisted sinew, and the feathers of birds. A bead or crystal is hung to the center or added into the web to enhance the dreams so that they may be better remembered the next day. Hang them in your homes and lodges and Happy Dreams!
